We are Sunday Times Best Places To Work certified!

Wow! We’ve been featured in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2024, powered by WorkL!

Not only did we make the list, Bird & Blend Tea Co. was the face of the announcement in the Sunday Times online & in print! How great do TEAm members G & Neve look at the front & centre of the article, which celebrated all the ways in which we are creating a purposeful & inspiring working environment!

Needless to say, we are thrilled to be featured for our ‘refreshing approach’: ‘At Worthing-based Bird & Blend Tea, for instance, co-founders Krisi Smith and Mike Turner know all 164 employees by name and initiatives including paid volunteering days and a monthly tea allowance make life at work feel sweet.’
And what better way to celebrate than with tea & cake? This week we took a moment to mark the achievement and recognise our people who have made this milestone possible, by surprising our store & office TEAms across the country with personalised cupcakes from family-run bakery Candy’s Cupcakes. Yummy!

What is Sunday Times Best Places To Work?

The Sunday Times Best Places To Work is a prestigious list that highlights the UK’s top-ranking employers in six key areas: reward and recognition, information sharing, empowerment, well-being, instilling pride, and job satisfaction.

To make the list, each company must achieve a minimum response rate (based on its size) and be ranked above 70 percent by its own workforce. Although the final listing is determined by an engagement score average, a highly engaged workplace must perform well in all six areas.

Why are we so excited to have been featured?

Our founding mission statement (written on the back of a napkin over 10 years ago) was to ‘prove you could build a successful business that based its decisions on people & planet, not just profit’. Fast forward to today, and our core strategic purpose is to be known & loved as a great place to work, so to receive this kind of recognition is something we’re hugely proud of.

When we entered the awards this year, we didn’t necessarily expect to make the list right away. Our goal was to get a benchmark for where we are now, gather feedback, and understand what we need to do over the next couple of years on our journey to be known and loved as a great place to work.

Making the list this year doesn’t mean that journey is over, by any means! Continuously building & improving our culture is a core focus in our 3 year strategy, and while we’ve come a long way, we want to be truly trailblazing leaders. To keep pushing forward, next year we’d love to aim big and make the top 10 alongside names like Octopus Energy, Dishoom & Vitality.

What makes our business different?

Our TEAm is just as important as our tea! We think our blend of treating people fairly & doing business in the right way is the recipe for a successful company & happy customers.

Here are just some of the ways we love to support our people & create a working culture that encourages our TEAm to thrive…

  • We’re a Living Wage employer: We believe that all our employees should be paid fairly based on the cost of living which is why we are part of the Living Wage Foundation.
  • Generous perks package: With various health, family, insurance & protection policies to help provide financial security & peace of mind for our people & their families.
  • Life Happens Leave: Sometimes life can throw unexpected challenges our way, we offer paid leave specifically dedicated to these situations to provide employees with the time & space needed.
  • Monthly tea allowance and generous staff discount: Of course, we all LOVE tea, and keep our tea cupboards fully stocked with our monthly tea allowance along with staff discount on gifts, teaware & all other products.
  • Mental Health Support: Access confidential and professional mental health support services to prioritise your well-being and address any personal or work-related challenges.
  • Paid volunteer days: All TEAm members are empowered to make a positive impact in our communities by participating in volunteer activities during dedicated paid volunteer days.
  • Dog-friendly office: Furry friends are always welcome in our pet-friendly environment that promotes work-life balance and companionship.

Not to mention our friendly & supportive culture, which touches everything we do. Our people love to work alongside like-minded individuals who value collaboration, camaraderie, & fun in the workplace.
