ChariTEA: The Silver Line
One of our chosen ChariTEAs this quarter is The Silver Line, a charity that aims to support older people across the UK. Set up by Dame Esther Rantzen (who also founded Childline), the charity aims to help older people who may be lonely to make friends and connect with other people. This is done via a free national helpline and befriending schemes.
For some older people, there’s a real stigma in admitting you’re lonely, and The Silver Line aims to combat this- especially as the population in the UK continues to grow older. A recent study by the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness found that many older people feel unable to speak about their loneliness- and The Silver Line has taken over 1.3 million calls from lonely older people since its launch, with use of the service increasing.
As well as a free national helpline which offers support, advice and friendship, the charity runs two key befriending schemes: a telephone befriending scheme, in which a volunteer will aim to call their Silver Line friend once a week for a chat; and a letter befriending scheme, where an older person can write and receive regular mail from their volunteer. The Silver Line covers the cost of all communication. Although it may seem like a small thing, to those who rely on these services, it can have a hugely positive effect on the lives of those using the service.
